报告题目:Flat Optics and Unusual Ultrathin optical devices

报 告 人:Xianzhong Chen,Assistant Professor(Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences, Heriot-Watt University, UK)

报告摘要:

Device miniaturization and system integration are two continuing trends in the production of photonic devices. However, further reduction in the thickness of the optical elements is hindered by the design theory. With the rapid development in metasurfaces and the unprecedented capabilities of manipulating light in a desirable manner by imparting local and space-variant abrupt phase change, the conventional concept of what constitutes an optical device continues to evolve. In this talk, I am going to review the current progress in optical metasurfaces that operate in the visible range and talk our recent work in metasurface research, including ultrathin lenses, image-switchable holograms, vortex beam generation and manipulation, multifunctional optical devices, arbitrary polarization manipulation and so on.

报告人简介:

Dr Xianzhong Chen is an Assistant Professor in Nanophotonics and leads the Nanophotonics Group at the Heriot-Watt University (HWU). His research interest includes nanophotonics, metamaterials, metasurfaces, plasmonics, ultrathin nanodevices, and low-cost nanofabrication. His research mainly focuses on light-matter interactions at the nanoscale and their applications in photonics, energy and biomedicine. He received his MSc (2001) and PhD (2004) from the Institute of Optics & Electronics (IOE), Chinese Academy of Sciences and subsequently worked there for two years first as a research assistant professor and then a research associate professor. He has published over 64 journal papers including 4 papers in Nature Communications. He was the winner of the Contribution Point Award at HWU in 2016 and 2018. His work on macroscopic invisibility cloaking was selected in "Top 10 Breakthroughs for 2010" by Physics World, and "Top 100 Stories in 2011" by Discover Magazine. He is a reviewer for Royal Academy of Engineering program, EPSRC program and Chang Jiang Scholars program. He also serves as a reviewer for high-profile journals such as Nature Nanotechnology and Nature Communications. Recently, he was invited as a guest editor for the special session of Metasurface for J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. and a top author to contribute a review paper on recent advances in optical metasurfaces and ultrathin optical devices. Details about his research can be found on his group website (http://nanophotonicslab.eps.hw.ac.uk/).
